WHARF WALKS

Saturday, March 7, 2015 and on every first Saturday of the month

The Monterey Fisherman's Wharf Association continues to team up with noted Monterey Bay Fisheries Historian and author, Tim Thomas, who is offering monthly "Wharf Walks -Walking Tours at Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf" (www.montereywharf.com) on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 AM - Noon. Wharf Walks will be held on March 7th focusing on "Gray Whales of the Monterey Bay."

LANGUAGE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD CULTURAL FESTIVAL

Save the date for the first ever “Language Capital of the World® Cultural Festival” on Saturday and Sunday, May 2nd and 3rd, 2015 at the Custom House Plaza in Monterey, CA from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.Held in the heart of Old Monterey, this inaugural “Language Capital of the World® Cultural Festival” will highlight Monterey's rich language, culture, and international affairs capabilities, as well as its Sister City relationships.  The Festival will feature cultural dancing and singing, ethnic foods and crafts, Sister City exhibits, and exhibits from the flagship foreign language and culture institutions of higher learning, including Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, Defense Language Institute, Naval Postgraduate School, and others. JAZZ BASH BY THE BAY

Founded in 1980, Dixieland Monterey celebrates the roots of classic jazz, swing and ragtime, and promotes the education of youth in the art of traditional jazz performance. Each year, enthusiasts from all over the United States and Canada travel to Monterey to enjoy some of the hottest traditional jazz and swing bands from the U.S. and around the world. Hop aboard the "Chattanooga Choo Choo" to “Tuxedo Junction  and get "In the Mood" to hear a “Moonlight Serenade” performed by a 13-piece Big Band and a half dozen singer-dancers wigh some hot boogie woogie! In The Mood is a fully staged tribute to Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, The Andrews Sisters and big band greats of the '40s. Complete with period costumes and choreography, In The Mood celebrates America's greatest generation that listened and boogied to up-tempo big band rhythms and danced to intimate ballads. WEST SIDE STORY

West Side Story is an American musical with a libretto by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and conception and choreography by Jerome Robbins. It was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein's score for the musical includes "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty", "A Boy Like That", "One Hand, One Heart", "Gee, Officer Krupke", and "Cool". KISS ME KATE

Winner of 3 Tony Awards & Critics Circle for Best Musical, Kiss Me Kate is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The story involves the production of a musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and the conflict on and off-stage between Fred Graham, the show's director, producer, and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi. A secondary romance concerns Lois Lane, the actress playing Bianca, and her gambler boyfriend, Bill, who runs afoul of some gangsters. The original production starred Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang and won the Tony-Award.
