JAPANESE AMERICAN HERITAGE DAYS

Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, 2014

Save the date for a fascinating and fun event for the whole family. Japanese American Heritage Days, sponsored by Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf and the Japanese American Citizens League will feature historic photo exhibit of the Japanese fishermen in Monterey, abalone cooking demonstration, origami demonstrations, ikebana and bonsai demonstrations, Taiko drums and other live musical performances, a “Pop” Ernest Look-alike Contest, an abalone song competition, an abalone helmet diving demonstration, abalone races, a tea ceremony, and much more. The Wharf restaurants will be serving small bites of a variety of delicious Japanese dishes, and there will be sake and beer tasting, and sweet treats. Read more

SALMON STRAVAGANZA

Salmon Sportfishing begins on April 5th; Commercial Salmon Fishing begins on May 1st

Many award-winning restaurants at Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf are participating in the special “Salmon Stravaganza" at Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf celebrating fresh King Salmon from the Monterey Bay.  Recreational salmon fishing kicked off on April 5th and commercial salmon fishing starts on May 1st. In addition to salmon, locals and visitors can enjoy a wide array of delicious entrees at Old Fisherman’s Wharf including other fresh seafood, steaks, pasta and much more.  These fine Monterey Wharf restaurants will be serving some great locally caught salmon entrees in May when the commercial season kicks off. SUNSET CRUISE ON MONTEREY BAY

Sunday, May 4th

Take a benefit cruise aboard Benji Shake's GREATLAND boat with Princess Monterey Whale Watching (limited to 130 people). Check in at 3:30 p.m. at Paluca Trattoria at the front of the Wharf for a pre-cruise Silent Auction and raffle, wine, cheese and more. Board at 4:30 p.m. Cruise will include refreshments, wine and hors d'oeuvres.Live music with the HO'OMANA Hawaiian Band.Cruise returns around 7:00 p.m. Cost: Early registration is $30 ($50 after April 15th). 100% of proceeds will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Monterey Boat Works (original building now Hopkins Marine Station) was the hub for building the fleet for the Monterey fishing industry. Angelo Siino and his sons were the master boat builders from Italy from the early 1900’s till the last boat built in 1954. Angelo’s granddaughter, Janet Martinez, has created a multimedia exhibit from old family photos and films that captures the creation of the boats and their launching into the sea. www.museumofmonterey.org

A celebration of a year-long gathering of stories and mementos of the Fishing Families that made Monterey famous. The industry had a great impact on the families and future generations of Italian and descendants of the multicultural fishing pioneers. 5TH ANNUAL WHALEFEST MONTEREY

On Saturday, January 24 & 25, 2015 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, the Monterey Old Fisherman's Wharf Association (www.montereywharf.com) will hold the 5th Annual WHALEFEST MONTEREY at and around Fisherman’s Wharf, 1 Old Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey, CA. This popular event celebrates the migration of the gray whales. It is designed to educate and inspire the public about many of the outstanding marine organizations that are involved in the Monterey Bay area and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
