WHARF WALKS

Saturday, July 4, 2015 and on every first Saturday of the month

The Monterey Fisherman's Wharf Association continues to team up with noted Monterey Bay Fisheries Historian and author, Tim Thomas, who is offering monthly "Wharf Walks -Walking Tours at Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf" (www.montereywharf.com) on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 AM - Noon. Wharf Walks will be held on July 4th (RSVP first!) focusing on " Celebrations on the Wharf!."

Enjoy a free Independence Day performance by the Monterey Pops! sponsored by Old Fisherman's Grotto and others. The 40-piece professional orchestra will present "Rodeo" by Aaron Copeland, "American Salute" by Morton Gould, themes from "Star Wars" by John Williams,  the final portion of Tchiakovsky's "1812 Overture" and more. COMMODORE SLOAT'S LANDING CEREMONY

Sunday, July 5, 2015 - Custom House Plaza

On Sunday, July 5, 2015 at 1:00 PM, at the Custom House Monterey State Historic Park, Commodore John Drake Sloat, Commander of the
American Pacific Squadron, will return to Monterey to commemorate his actions here 169 years ago. “Sloat’s Landing” on July 7, 1846 captured 600,000 square miles of Mexican Alta California for the United States without a shot in anger being fired - probably the most forgotten
and under-appreciated major event in American history.

FLAME OF HOPE

July 16, 2015

On July 16, 2015, the Flame of Hope, the official torch for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015, will be carried through the City of Monterey, with a ceremony to be held at Old Fisherman's Wharf at 5:00 p.m. Please join the City of Monterey in welcoming the law enforcement officers who serve as the Guardians of the Flame of Hope and the Special Olympic athletes as they participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg. This stop is one of many ceremonies taking place to welcome the torch as it passes through the cities of Northern California on its journey to Los Angeles.

MONTEREY BAY GREEK FESTIVAL

Labor Day Weekend Saturday, Sunday and Monday - September 5-7, 2015 - 11 am - 6 pm

Saint John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church will be holding its annual Greek festival at the Custom House Plaza in Monterey adjacent to Fisherman's Wharf. There will be homemade Greek food, exciting vendors, great dancers and Greek music. Admission is always free in the food is always delicious.

 

WEST SIDE STORY

Friday & Saturday, September 5-6 and Friday & Saturday 12-13, 2015

West Side Story is an American musical with a libretto by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and conception and choreography by Jerome Robbins. It was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein's score for the musical includes "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty", "A Boy Like That", "One Hand, One Heart", "Gee, Officer Krupke", and "Cool". Lisa Lampanelli is known as Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean. This equal opportunity offender is a regular on Howard Stern's Sirius satellite radio shows, and she has appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Show with David Letterman," "Chelsea Lately," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "The Dr. Oz Show" and "Good Morning America." MONTEREY HISTORY FEST

Monterey History Fest showcases Monterey’s important role in California’s early history. From the Royal Presidio Chapel to the Lower Presidio of Monterey with stops in between, the past can be easily explored over the weekend’s “Open House” of activities and tours of many of the historic buildings, sites and new activities.

MONTEREY BEACH SPORT FEST

An eclectic mix of beach and ocean competitions. The Monterey Beach SportsFest is a two-day festival celebrating the ocean lifestyle on Monterey’s Del Monte Beach, nestled between downtown Monterey and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Participants and spectators will be inspired to care for the ocean as they directly connect to it through the athletic events in and adjacent to the sea, and through interaction with the educational and conservation resources available at our two-day “Healthy People, Healthy Oceans” Expo.
