The Monterey Jazz Festival will exhibit historical material, in partnership with the Museum of Monterey, featuring historical photos, posters, clothing, and memorabilia from the Festival’s 58-year history, including a drum set once owned by Shelly Manne. It was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. A secondary romance concerns Lois Lane, the actress playing Bianca, and her gambler boyfriend, Bill, who runs afoul of some gangsters. The original production starred Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang and won the Tony-Award.
